What is CCaaS, and how do you build a custom contact center as a service?
CCaaS (contact center as a service) is a contact center you buy as a service instead of building the infrastructure yourself. Camacode builds it custom: an AI contact center over voice, chat and email, sitting on your real process and connected to your ERP and CRM, where you decide where the data lives and AI handles the repetitive part while people keep the judgment.

“We need a call center” usually means something else: that calls, emails and chats come in through separate places, nobody has the full context, and the team spends the day copying data from one screen to another. A well-planned CCaaS is not about buying more lines: it is about tidying up that process and adding AI where it actually helps.
What is a CCaaS (contact center as a service)?
CCaaS stands for contact center as a service: a contact center you buy as a cloud service instead of building and maintaining the phone, chat and email infrastructure yourself. Rather than buying switchboards, servers and scattered licenses, you get a platform that unifies the channels your customers reach you through (voice, chat, email, forms) and that your team works from. The promise of the model is reasonable: less hardware, fast rollout and pay-as-you-go. The problem is not the concept, but how it comes packaged with most vendors, as the next section shows.
Why does an off-the-shelf CCaaS fall short?
Because they sell you a mold and your company has to fit inside it. An off-the-shelf CCaaS brings its own flows, its own fields, its own routing logic and its own idea of what a “conversation” is, and your real process, the one your people actually use, gets trimmed to fit. Three costs show up that no demo mentions: half-finished integrations (the CRM and ERP end up half-connected, so the team keeps copying data by hand), data hosted wherever the vendor decides and on their terms, and a generic AI that sounds great in the sales video but does not know your catalog, your rates or your exceptions. You pay a growing monthly fee for modules you never use and still have not solved what hurt. Before you sign, it is worth looking at what processes can actually be automated in your operation.
What changes with a custom CCaaS?
The order flips: process first, technology second. Camacode builds the contact center around how you handle customers today and how you should, not around a template.
Channels
Voice, chat and email handled with the same logic and the same context, not as three separate inboxes. AI resolves the first line (the usual inquiry, the one that repeats a thousand times) and escalates to a person when the case calls for it, with the whole conversation already captured.
Integration and data
The center connects to your CRM, your ERP or your booking system, so every conversation arrives with the customer’s history and is logged where it belongs. And you decide where that data lives: your infrastructure, a private server or your cloud. That same connected-data approach is what makes reliable customer follow-up possible, so nothing falls through the cracks between channels.
Through all of this, human oversight is part of the design, not a patch: AI handles the repetitive part and people keep the judgment on anything delicate. It is the same principle behind how we approach implementing AI in your business, starting with the process rather than the tool.
Case study: the voice channel of a CCaaS, built custom
A car rental company did not want “a call center platform”: it wanted to stop losing calls after hours. We built an AI phone answering service on top of their real process: it handles the usual inquiries, collects the booking details and qualifies the caller before passing them to the team, wired into their operation, with AI on the first line and the team keeping the judgment on anything delicate. We tell the full story in an AI phone answering service for a car rental company. Let’s be clear about the scope: that project covers a single channel, voice, not a finished multichannel contact center. A full CCaaS unifies voice, chat and email; this case solved the voice channel, and the same engine and approach then extend to chat and email until the channels are unified. That is exactly why it is a good example of how a custom CCaaS starts: one channel, done right, and you add the rest from there.
Where should you start with your custom contact center?
Pick one channel and one specific process that hurts today: first-line phone support, the repeated inquiries in email or the chat on your website. Measure how much of the volume is repetitive and what data is needed to resolve it, validate that slice in weeks, and add channels and integrations from there. This one-process-at-a-time approach is the basis of our work as an AI agency and of AI for business, where we support you from the first use case through to the full contact center.
